We joined two friends to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, part of their NYC bucket list they were making their way through before moving to Portland in March. We took the ferry mid-morning on a blustery Sunday, picked up our audio tours, and then made our way to the crown. The staircase to the top of Lady Liberty’s brow was terribly narrow, lined tightly with smooth silver rails that were warn from many hands. Only few people can crowd in at once, and the view through the tiny windows is restricted. Later from below, looking up at the statue, it was hard to believe we’d been peering through that curved row of small squares.
