Montauk in Winter

Montauk in Winter

Yesterday David and I drove the three hours from Queens to the end of Long Island where we enjoyed a walk around the Montauk Point Lighthouse. The drive was more than 200 miles round trip and a mostly beautiful with ocean pines lining much of the highways, the clear blue sky lit with cold February […]

Brick Play

The family who lives upstairs asked me to take some photos of them playing with the boys’ bricks. Their mother wrote a blog about teaching children the value of money and how she used bricks to illustrate the lesson. It’s being reprinted in a magazine and hopefully one of these photos will accompany it.

Pear Cake

I found this recipe on The Gluten Free Vegan blog and gave it a try. It’s an unbelievably heavy cake – to hold, not to eat – wonderful texture, super dense and moist. The flavor was milder than I expected, but complex, due in part to the different grains. I think I’ll add some spices […]

We wound our little car through the snowy trees, the light alternating between bright and reflective, and a cold, wintery gray. The preserve is home to two dozen wolves comprising four […]

Vegan Raspberry Scones

For years I’ve been interested in animal welfare and food politics, as well as nutrition and the correlation between diet, health and personal values. A friend gave me the Baby Cakes baking book, which has been great as all the recipes are gluten-free or low-gluten, and they are all vegan, meaning they contain no animal […]

Black Hen at White Hawk

Over the New Year’s holiday, we visited White Hawk, an alternative-living community in Denton, Texas, where some old family friends of my husband live. A black hen was foraging in the front yard and I took the opportunity to begin building my animal photography portfolio.

Up in Flames

Up in Flames

My mother-in-law, Janet, replaced her dried out Christmas tree with a new artificial tree for our trip home so we could exchange gifts in a festive setting. The dry tree sat out on their porch, waiting for our arrival. On New Year’s Eve, a few hours before midnight, we burned the tree in their fire […]
